a dwelling, be it a bark house, a mud house or a tent, such as the people lived in before contact with the whites; and all the utensils belonging to the house, as well as the implements, weapons, ornaments and dress of the people. Now if there is any way by which you can secure these from any tribe I wish you would do so. If I cannot get a dwelling of full size ^[[that is secure [?] that is in active use,]] then I would like to have a large model made, if you can find any Indian to do it. Of course I should expect to pay the Indian for such material and work. Would not Miss Gay take this matter in hand as a special work and relieve you of all thought of the matter? Please give my kind regards to her and ask her if she will not devote her attention to this matter for the benefit of the great Exposition.

I have just appointed Dr. Boas as Special Assistant in Charge of the Sub-department of Physical Anthropology, and we hope to have [[strikethrough]] a great many [[/strikethrough]] ^[[complete]] measurements made of a great many tribes both of North and South America, and to represent by a series of charts and tables the physical characteristics of the various American peoples. This has never been done, and it is of the utmost importance that it should be done before it is too late. I think it will be a very interesting part of our exhibition.
