John is a peculiar boy, has few friends, but warm ones.  He is more like his mother than like me.

I am very anxious lest you should break down.  I thought you were very near it when you left Washington, and you must have had a dreadful summer with the fatigue and heat.  I beg you will spare yourself, for the sake of your friends, if not for you own sake.  Your life and strength are too valuable to others to be thrown away.
