In order to have the roof poles at top form a bell shaped cone every alternate roof pole was cut ^(beyond the stringers) roof poles & stringers were wound together by the strands of bark. this winding was done more carefully and firmly than that at bottom.

(The willow and slip. elm bark were always buried in earth at time posts & poles were cut in order to be in good condition when needed.)

The tallest willow poles were taken for this work. The Indian women sat about 3 ft apart all around the frame work of roof poles-. One roof pole being selected, the willow ends were wound
