My Friend, Since you left I have been thinking over all that has passed in your work. the trouble [[?]] worry and expense. Now I do not want you to think that I am trying to work you for money for I am not. Ever since I brought the old man to Washington people (Indians) have been circulating all sorts of story about me and some went far and told I received big pay while the old man received little pay. Now I write to explain how I came to get the old man to go- When I got Mr. La Flesches' letter, I  went to the old man and talked with him. He flatly refused to go for he did not want to have the name of being the man who gave the secrets away to white people. I told him all and said the lady wants to get your ceremonies to preserve not to publish it to the public so they could make fun of them. He asked me money time and on and furnished it to him or he would back out. I had to go slow with him and kept him from others to talk to him. after I had paid him a certain sum he finally promised
