February 15, 1904.

Dear Miss Fletcher:

Pursuant to our conversation of last week, I am send-to you the Caddoan material for the Dictionary of Indians, as well as the cards which [[underlined]] may [[/underlined]] belong to that stock.

It is difficult to say just when the work should be finished. It is desirable that you have as much time as necessary, but it is expected that authority will soon be granted by Congress for the publication of the Dictionary in the form in which the Bureau desires to have it, and I am anxious to have the first volume (A to M) ready by that time. There will be an advantage, therefore, in completing the first half of the alphabet (i.e., all the tribes, settlements, etc., whose names begin with letters from A to M) as soon as practicable; the remainder can then follow a little more leisurely.

I am sending the material informally, as Mr. Holmes is confined to his house by illness. Kindly communicate with Mr. Holmes, if you will, regarding the hon^[[or]]arium, when you have reached a point in your examination of the material that will enable you to determine what the compensation for the task should be.

I will send Mrs. Cushing's local address later. I do not have it at hand.

Very truly yours,
