Dear Miss Fletcher:-

Your letter of Feb-17" to Miss Kate ^and was forwarded to me concerning Chief Joseph. I will state Chief Lawyer, father of James and Archie Lawyer was a head chief of all the Nez Perce tribe of Indians at the time the treaty was made between them and Govt. 1855. at Ft. Walla Walla, Isac- Stevens representing Govt.

Josephs father was only a second chief, until the treaty of 1863, when he objected of leaving Walla-wa out of the Res- there and then was a split in the tribe. Josephs father was among those who accepted Spalding as a missionary and got his ^name Joseph by Spalding. The late Josephs Indian name was [Hin-wa-toya-lat-Kit.) which means a rolling thunder.
