[[ Ans'd [[both?]] of [[His?]] Sept. 2- [[line]] ]] Onteora Park, Tannersville, NY 26" August 1921 My dear Miss Fletcher, Never! You are diagnosing quite mistakenly! No, I have just been distracted from Hako by other matters. & also appalled by the enormous difficulty of doing the work without my secretary to transcribe & retranscribe. The reason for my desire to [[underlined]] transpose [[/underlined]] Hako is that no single friend of mine has yet been able or willing to get the inspiration direct. One acquaintance here is actually [[underlined]] studying [[/studying]] a copy I have loaned him. One clergyman who heard a lecture of mine has [[underlined] studied [[/underlined]] & found the "[[underlined]] certain [[/underlined]] evidence of the Holy Ghost" as he put it "as in nothing else he ever read not excluding the N.T." Now in so many years of use & quotations that looks to me a poor result. Alexander's pamphlet is exhausted I got the remainder of the edition from the Open Court Publ. Co so then here we are: shall we attempt to transfer the great work to intelligible & directly inspiring form? I think the chief difficulty is that Hako as you have put it forth remains undigested un-integrated. [[underlined]] Here [[/underlined]] are the songs (1) the literal word for word renderings: [[underlined]] there [[/underlined]] are the (2) translations & still here, these, or otherwhere the (3) comments These three sources should be "fused" & organized. so that a reader has [[underlined]] one only text [[/underlined]] to consider. I propose to make a hard vernacular transmitting all the word can carry & interrupt the stanzas or songs with [[underlined]] prose [[/underlined]] in the form of exhortation or interpretation dramatically addressed either to God or the participants in the ceremony. So the reader will have [[underlined]] one impression [[/underlined]]. He can always [[underlined]] correct [[/underlined]] it by reference to the B of S. publication if I mislead him in my paraphrase. Now for an example of translation. I shall give you the opening invocation to this powers copying the repeated lines only once
