get all done without a word of controversy.  You may be sure I shall exercise every care to avoid any trouble, but I must, if I can protect these Indians who have gone out on their land.  
Third:  The Agent is in with the Cox outfit and Frank Holt.  These are the white men who are determined to secure land on this res.  Their wives have failed to prove any Nez Perce blood, & the tribe have refused openly to adopt them.  I will as soon as I can get Copying ink send in the full history of the Case.  I have learned that Cox offered money to his principal witnesses to help him, but this tribe tore their evidence to threads.  These men are making extensive improvements, controlling hundreds of acres.  I have warned them that they were going too far but the Agent so I am credibly informed has told them he will see them secure.  Agt. R. has Frank Holt's oldest daughter as a teacher and Mr Vollmer told me Agt. R. has in with these men. 
   You will I hope pardon this long letter but I am likely to run into tight places because I have a man to deal with who cares about as much for Indians as for bears & while I shall do all I can for peace, I want you to
