Winnebago Agency, Nebraska.
Sept 14, 1887.
Hon. Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
Sir:
At a council recently held with the Winnebago tribe, I was requested to ask the Department, if they would please furnish me for the information of the tribe, "a statement, as to the amount of land purchased by the railroad, and the sum per acre paid. The people do not remember negotiating for the right of way for the Norfolk branch. They do recall selling the right of way through, Townships 27. Range 6.; J.26. R.6; and J.25 Range 6, with side track and stations, the road to run from Omaha to Sioux City. At Emerson, a town just on the northern border of the reservation, having its station a little less than a quarter of a mile south, and within the reservation lines, the road branches, and the western branch runs through J.27. Range 6; J.27. R.5; and J.26. R.5. This is the right of way for which the tribe think they have not been paid. Permit me to ask that the information concerning the payment for the Norfork branch, be furnished.
Respectfully
