My dear Francis

Your valued & interesting letter of the 23d came this morning & I have worked all day on the chapter "Religion & Ethics" I think I have much improved it. I wish I could read it to you. I have made a strong point on the two words Wakonda & [[Wanaxie?]] & killed the Gt. Spirit-Idea, & the white-notion that Wakonda was borrowed from the Missionary.

I shall say a little of the myths. That is a very suggestive idea that songs are remains of lost rituals. That is something of the idea had to have had that there has been a mixing of myth, or ritual, which related to the Cosmos, & legend, which again is mixed and all degenerated into folk tales.
