Yes I think Joel is pretty wild. I dont understand him at all, nor what he is driving at. It is a pity that men can be so foolish. I cant find out anything about the man he said he was working for in Phila. Mr. Hodge knows nothing of the man.

I can see how you are fixed in the field, & I do hope the money will hold out to let you bring the men on, but I am a little afraid. Still I do not know. I think when Mr. H. sees how you are working he will then realize your request, I mean sees your notes, and that you are trying to make a thorough piece of work. I don't think it would be wise for me to say anything. He would be more apt to respect you & grant your request than if it came thro. a third person. You will I think understand how that is. He will want to deal direct with you concerning all matters, & not thro anyone else.
