My dear Francis,

The promised rain & a marked fall in temperature has not yet come. I trust it is on the way for the heat is very hard to bear, & makes work very difficult if not impossible. I have not been able to sit in the study, so you have not had many letters. This morning while a little of the morning freshness remains I take the opportunity to write, but it is still very warm, & I suffer a good deal.

Yesterday Mr Parson went with one of the New York cousins to visit Alice in her new home. I told her that you had wished to telegraph your congratulations to Alice on her wedding day but was was unable to do so. The wedding was on Tuesday May 16. Mrs. P. was pleased that you thought of it and so was Mr. Parsons. Mrs. P. said she would tell Alice. I think it rather hard on Alice
