My dear Francis
Your letter of the 20th has just come, with its enclosures. Which as you request I return, [[insert]] the clippings, but hold your letter to Cadman. [[/insert]] I am surprised that Cadman should give forth anything so foolishly false. It may be that a reporter talked to Cadman & Cadman told of writing out the Waxobe Songs, & the reporter did not get the right idea of the work done. The whole article is silly and vain, [[insert]] if he really said these things [[/insert]] but still Cadman may not be responsible. He found the transcription difficult, and I have no doubt that has magnified the work in his own eyes. It is hard finding people exactly fair & honest. Of course when the book appears the facts will appear, & if any one should put the facts over against this article it would be bad for Cadman. I'm very sorry for it. He gives you credit for the story of the opera.

[[margin]] Let us give Cadman the benefit of the doubt. I've read it again, & I think a reporter dressed it up & made it appear that Cadman said more than he really did. [[/margin]]
