It has been said, (by Montezuma) that the doing away with the reservation system would solve the problem. It would in a way, but it would be to make a bad condition worse. It is one of the least of the evils to be feared.

There are two evils that are to be feared the most, and which must be met with the most careful consideration; they are carrying the Indians into degradation and will finally plunge them into pauperism. They are They are, 1st idleness, 2nd love for strong drinks.

There is no harm in our coming here to make speeches and have them printed in the newspapers, or exchanging pleasantries with the citizens of this city but the city should not be the field of operation of this society if it is to accomplish anything. It must hold its meetings on the various Indian reservations, hold their discussions there, let all Indians take part. The danger toward which they are drifting should be pointed out
