Pawhuska, Ok.

My dear M.
Yesterday I drove over to Fairfax and got my mail. Two letters from you, one from Caryl, one from Prof. Alexander, also one from the Bureau, sending my pay. The drive was a bit rough but the day was high and delightfully pleasant. A fine road is being built from Pawhuska to Fairfax over a beautiful prairie country. The drive was made in a little over an hour. My woolen neck arrangement came in handy as the breeze created by the speed of the auto made it quite cool. I saw some of my old Indian friends in town at Fairfax and they were very glad to see me. Many of the Indians have autos and drive them.

Fred Lookout has a very sick relative at his house & who may die at any moment and that will cause a delay in making the photograph I want of him. He was very willing to do it. He saw, from the interview he had with Mr. McDonald and Mr. Vaux last summer, that I have been defending the new religion and he appreciates that very much. Both he and his wife are thorough believers in it and both know that it is being attacked
