kept by one Clara Pearson, and did there engage in a dispute and a quarrel with enlisted men.

This at the house of one Clara Pearson, between the Ashville and Rutherford roads, about nine (9) miles from Morganton, N. C., on or about the 15th day of September, 1865.

Specification 2d.  In this, that Captain John S. Bowles, Co. B, 5th Regiment Ohio Vol. Cavalry, then commanding the sub-district of Morganton and the 5th Regiment Ohio Vol. Cavalry, did openly receive in his camp a notorious prostitute (name unknown,) and did shut himself up in his tent with her, and did afterwards boast that he had at the time, he was shut up in the tent with the woman, have carnal intercourse wit her, thus creating scandal in his command and disgracing himself.

This at Camp Heath, near Morganton, N. C., on or about the 9th day of September, 1865.

Specification 3d.  IN this, that Captain John S. Bowles, Co. B, 5th Regiment Ohio Vol. Cavalry, then commanding the sub-district of Morganton, North Carolina and the 5th Regiment Ohio Vol. Cavalry, was shamefully intoxicated, publicly and in the presence of his command, so much so as to be entirely unfit for duty.

This at Morganton, N. C., on or about September 23d, 1865.

Specification 4th.  In this, that Captain John S. Bowles, Co. B, 5th Regiment Ohio Vol. Cavalry, did arrest and confine in the jail at Morganton, N. C., a citizen of Burke county, North Carolina, named William Denton, and upon application being made in person by said Denton's daughter, Sarah Ann Denton, for the release of her father, the said Captain Bowles did take hold of her in a lewd and familiar manner, and attempt to pull her into his tent, proposing to her that if she would lie on his bed and submit herself to him, he would release her father or words to that effect.

This at Camp Heath, near Morganton, N. C., on or about the 2d of October, 1865.
