Bureau Refugees Freedmen &c
Central Dist Raleigh N.C. Sept 13" 1865

Lieut Beecher
A. A. Genl

I have the honor to submit the following report for the Central District of N.C. for the month of August 1865. A large number of Cases of injustice to Freedmen, by maltreatment and as to rights of property and wages have been adjudicated by Officers of this Bureau. Careful memoranda of these Cases have been preserved, but I am not able with my present Clerical force to present anything like a complete record of them. The most important Cases are mentioned in this report. Two Cases of attempted rape by freedmen on white women are reported to have occurred within this month, one case near Smithfield in Johnson County The man who is supposed to have committed the crime was murdered by the Citizens, in the other which occurred in Nash Co the man is held in Custody for investigation when certain evidence shall be produced
