| August 27th | Plymouth N. C | 2d Lieut Jno M. Foote |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
---|---|---|---|---|---| During the month I have forwarded one application for arrears of Pay and Bounty. Six claims for services in the Q. M. Dept. and have received and paid the sum of $320 53 due discharged soldiers

I have been appointed Magistrate by the Governor for the County of Washington and have accepted the office

Five hundred bushels of Corn shipped from Hyde Co have been received. The disposition that I have made of it has been reported by letter. There are but few persons comparatively who now need assistance but it is feared by many - and not without good reasons - that the suffering will be much greater during the winter

The Shingle Swamps have up to the present time furnished employment for a large number of hands. A great many enticed by the high price of labor have come from different parts of this State and Virginia

The Price of Shingles has declined to such an extent that many manufacturers are about to give up the business. If prices continue ^[[insert]] low [[/insert]], the result will be that large numbers of hands will be thrown out of employment and there being no other demand for them and they having no crops many will be in a destitute condition for as a rule they are improvident, and no matter how high wages may be, they never accumulate money.
