[[underlined]] July 31 [[/underlined]] Tramped all day over buttes & badlands & valley & prairie. Got good lists of plants & birds & shot a Eutamias minimus & a Lepus baileyi.

The rims & ridges and slopes are all badlands, but the tops of mesas, benches, valley bottoms and prairie back of benches is all good land, with big grama & other grasses, and some farms. Most of the old farms are on the valley bottoms but many are opening up on the mesas.

The soil is largely gumbo but in places sandy or well mixed with sand. The bare badland slopes are as usual picturesque & interesting.

There is considerable timber of Cottonwood, ash & boxelder along the river & thickets of bull berry chokecherry, currant & [[?]] bushes, with rose & Symphorocarpos patches. On north slopes of the Badland buttes there is lots of

Lupus baileyi = Canis lupus baileyi, mexican wolf Thanks for assist. I think (based on handwriting and context from other pages,) that it's a rabbit and am going with Lepus baileyi = Cottontail rabbit Symphorocarpos = symphoricarpos
