[[underlined]] Livingston [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] Aug. 17 [[/underlined]] Left at 2:40 PM for Helena. Same open valley west about 15 miles to near entrance of tunnel, when the Canadian zone timber comes down on cold slope to railroad & continues along one or both sides mostly to Bozeman - dense forests of Murry pine, Picea, Aspens & along creek Balsam popler, alders & willows. The hot slopes are open grassy or sage brushy with lots of Balsamorrhiza sagitifolia, the first seen this year. 
 A few Cynomys ludovicianus holes seen about 10 mi W. of Livingston & also Citellus richardsoni all along for about 12 miles. 
[[underlined]] Bozeman Valley [[/underlined]] is an immense, flat plain, well watered, mostly irrigated, good farming country and full transitions gone. Hay & oats are the principal crops. but other grains are raised. 
The trees along streams and around [[ranches?]] are mostly balsam & angustifolia poplar. Artemisias are abundant [[native?]] plants - variety [[underlined]] frigida [[/underlined]], [[underlined]] tridentata [[/ underlined]], & ludoviciana [[/underlined]] (white leaf).
Citellis richardoni are common over the valleys. a few seen & lots of burrows.
