We were obliged to memorize the general order for guards and special instructions were given for our particular posts.  All the excitement I experienced was chasing big rats and talking, against the rules, with my mates.  We had much time for reverie.  The two principal things I recall as most momentous to my comfort of mind were that the signet ring which I have worn on the third finger of my right hand since Lizzie Connor gave it to me, fitted better on my middle finger, left hand.  The other is more important.  Therein I decided that never, if I could possibly help it, would I work indoors.  The out of doors is God's own.
