November [[strikethrough]] 25 [[/strikethrough]] ^[[21]], 1947

My dear Mr. da Costa:

I suppose that you have received a letter from Mr. André Rottenburg announcing this letter of mine. I saw Mr. Rottenburg a short time ago in Paris and he told me about you and your firm in Rio de Janeiro. We agreed that I should try, after my return to New York, to establish a business link between you and ourselves.

Mr. Rottenburg told me of your interest in paintings of the Venetian School of the 18th century as well as in the French 19th century. Before going into details, I want to let you know that we also have paintings and drawings of the early Italian Schools, some of the early Netherlands, early Spanish and French, and besides, 18th century French and English Schools.

I would be glad to send you any information about paintings of these periods that you might desire, but today without waiting and acting upon the suggestions of Mr. Rottenburg, I take pleasure in enclosing herein several photographs of works by artists whom he mentioned as being of main interest to you.

Unfortunately, I have no [[strikethrough]] Gaddi [[/strikethrough]] ^[[Guardi]] paintings on hand but I am including photographs of the following: You will find on the back of each print a description of color, pedigree, bibliography, and places where it was exhibited.

[[underlined]] TIEPOLO [[/underlined]] "Virgin and Child": In the book by Pompeo Molmenti "Tiepolo, la Vie et l'Ouevre du Peintre" - French edition - a similar painting by an imitator of Tiepolo has been reproduced on Plate 241.

In the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. there now hangs a painting of the name subject, but with great differences. Ours is certainly of no less good quality, I might say on the contrary.

The price to our customers is $9,500.- (Nine thousand five hundred dollars). However, if the painting is of interest to you we would gladly give you a better price.

[[underlined]] MONET [[/underlined]] "Le Jardin de Monet": This is a very lovely painting, glowing with sunshine and joie de vivre. It is one of the most typical and beautiful examples of the impressionistic technique. Our price is $12,000.- (Twelve thousand dollars) on which we would allow a 20% discount.

[[underlined]] RENOIR [[/underlined]] "Landscape": An excellent little landscape, very strong in color, with beautiful relief.

Our price is $4,700.- (Four thousand seven hundred dollars) on which we would allow a discount of 13%.
