Dear Sirs,

I have just received a letter from Mr. Cleveland of the City Art Gallery, Manchester., in which he states that you have asked for a photograph of my Phillipe de Champaigne, which was in the Manchester Exhibition recently.

If it was your firm that was responsible for the recent transaction with the National Gallery, when an example of this master was acquired, I should be grateful to receive a photograph of this picture in exchange.  This master is not very photogenic because of the intense colouring, and for this reason the aesthetic qualities of the figure of the Madonna, in my picture, are partly lost.
