From the 11th to the 25th inclusive, the curator was absent from Washington, having been officially directed to "proceed to Chicago"... for the purpose of examining the ornithological exhibits at the World's Columbian Exposition in the interest of the National Museum."  In compliance with these instructions, the various bird collections in Jackson Park were carefully examined, many valuable specimens secured for the National Museum.
