8. GIVE THE NAMES OF ANY PERSONS WHO HAVE PROSECUTED INVESTIGATIONS IN YOUR DEPARTMENT DURING THE YEAR, AND STATE THE SPECIAL AIM OF THEIR STUDIES.

Mr, Wm Brewster, of Cambridge, Mass., brought to Washington a considerable number of specimens of North American and Mexican birds, whose correct determination was possible only by comparison with National Museum types and other specimens.

The Committee of Classification and Classification and Nomenclature of the American Ornithologists' Union held its sessions in the office of the Curator of the Department of birds, and made daily use of the study series, thereby deciding numerous questions of importance in connection with the Union's Check-List of North American Birds.

Mr. Chas. B. Cory, Boston, Mass.; consulted the collections with the object of identifying a species of [[underlined]] Elainea [[/underlined]] from San Domingo.  

Dr. A.K. Fisher, Dept. of Agriculture, Washington, D.C., examined specimens on various occasions to determine a species of [[underlined]] Aphelcoma [[/underlined]] from Texas, a species of [[underlined]] Basilinna [[/underlined]] from Arizona, a [[underlined]] Callipepla [[/underlined]]; to work out the geographical distribution of species of [[underlined]] Empidonax [[/underlined]], and of [[underlined]] Sialia [[/underlined]], etc., etc., mainly in connection with work in the Department of Agriculture.

Major Chas. E. Bendire, Honorary Curator of the Department of Oölogy, and Mr. Wm. Palmer, taxidermist of the Museum, have frequently consulted the collections for the identification of specimens, the former also to ascertain the geographical range of species included  in the second volume of his "Life Histories of North American Birds".
