123 Bureau Refugees Freedmen and A.L. Head Quarters Asst Comr DC. Washington, March 23d. 1868. [[underlined]] Brubaker Capt. J C [[/underlined]] Harpers Ferry, West Va. Dear Sir: A [[underlined]] Mr. Garfield [[/underlined]] from New York called on me this morning. He has good papers and wants to teach, and I think would do first rate for the school at Shepherdstown. He is quite a good appearing young man. His brother is with him, and he also wants to teach. I told them I would write to you to-day and probably would get a reply by Wednesday morning. I wish you would go to Shepherdstown and see if you cannot arrange the matter. If it is all right I will send one or both along. I hope you will not fail to make the arrangement for one of them at Shepherdstown. May be there is a white school for the other. Very Respectfully Yours [[signature]] John Kimball [[/signature]] Supt. of Education. [[line across page]] 124 Bureau Refugees Freedmen and A.L. Head Quarters Asst. Comr D.C. Dear Sir: Genl. Howard says he will help them, at Hagerstown, with the Brick needed and in other ways such as they want to the amount of three hundred dollars ($300,00). I have not the plan of the Martinsbury House. If they want a house at Hagerstown 25 x 50 ft. and 12 ft. posted, I would let them have it, and have the plan made out like the Martinsburg house.
