Madam: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th instant requesting an appointment as teacher of freedpeople in Virginia.

My jurisdiction does not include Virginia, and consequently I have nothing whatever to do with the schools in that state.

I regret that it is not in my power to employ you.

Am I to understand then that you have no place for a first class white lady whose salary is paid if she can be well located? Please reply immediately.

I send transportation for Miss [[underlined]] Sullivan. [[/underlined]] She will come to Baltimore and take the Steamer "Hi Livingston" which leaves every Friday evening at 6 o'clock from pier No. 7 foot of Conway street. On that steamer she will go to Stone Wharf, St. Clements Bay, St. Mary's County, where she will be met by [[underlined]] Henry Butler, [[/underlined]] Trustee, with whom she will board and who will show her the school.

If she can get off tomorrow night, well - if not, in one week. If they will not take her transportation on Steamer, she must pay and the money will be refunded. If Butler does not meet her she must get some one to take her to his house.

Have her write to me as soon as she gets to her place.

Very respectfully yours
