Dear Sir:

Harper's Ferry is not in Rockbridge Co., but Jefferson Co., and the buildings there are owned by the Government. Congress has ordered them with ground to be deeded to the Society, but the deed has not yet been made out, and until it is done [[underlined]] Genl. Whittlesey [[/underlined]] says, rent cannot be collected. The other papers have gone forward.

Respectfully Yours,

Dear Sir:

[[underlined]] Mr. Cole [[/underlined]] is as Pisgah, Chas. Co., Md. I will try to arrange for refunding money for [[underlined]] Books. [[/underlined]] I hope that school will be kept up. I do not know if a woman will do or not, but judge she will. I think the District of Columbia ought to take care of is own schools. The col'd get just as much as the white children. $50.00 with Bureau help would sustain five of them in the County. As long as we do for the City and neglect the Country the people will be likely to starve instead of working when food grows.

Nearly all the Societies have been withdrawn from the Cities, and so I think they ought to be. Not but that a great missionary work can be done here as in N.Y., but the call is so much louder in the Country places. In Maryland the people get no aid from taxation in most places, not even from the tax they themselves pay. There they get the full amount.

In Maryland no teacher is sent unless the people will pay board and incidentals, etc. There all are paid at the rate of $50.00 per mo. [[underlined]] Mrs. Parsons [[/underlined]] is a worthy lady and teacher, has a very fair school, not the best, but nevertheless she is an excellent teacher.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
(Sgd.) John Kimball
Supt. Education.

Dear Sir:

I am informed by [[blank]] that no transportation will be granted this year. A circular will be out in a few days, stating what the Bureau will and will not do this year. I think you had better wait for the circular.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
