Oxford, Pa.

Dear Sir:

[[underlined]] Rev. E. F. Hatfield [[/underlined]] writes me that Mr. [[underlined]] Still [[/underlined]] who was sent out from your University to teach in Maryland, failed to secure a location, and has returned. I proposed to Mr. [[underlined]] Hatfield [[/underlined]] sometime ago to send Mr. [[underlined]] S. [[/underlined]] to the school at Forestville, but when he called here on his way there, I was obliged to disappoint him as to the location, and offered him the school at Milestown, St. Marys Co., which was the best arrangement I could make for him then. He seemed willing to go, but found upon inquiry that the boat which stops at that landing did not start for two or three days, although he might have gone by stage, any day, within four or five miles of the place. He preferred to go by boat, but said he was short of money, and I loaned him three dollars which he thought sufficient to pay his expenses, and I supposed he had arrived there last Saturday. Now we have need of Mr. [[underlined]] Still's [[/underlined]] services, and if he really wants to teach I will offer him the school at Brooklyn, which is but a short distance from Baltimore. The enclosed letter of Mr. [[underlined]] Tillghman [[/underlined]] will instruct him how to proceed. In case he cannot go on Saturday, let him start next Tuesday, and call on Mr. [[underlined]] E. T. Monteith, [[/underlined]] No. So. Gay St., Baltimore. Mr. [[underlined]] H. [[/underlined]] proposes to locate him at Clear Spring, but I have just received a reply to a letter written nearly a month ago, stating that they are not yet ready, and are not certain about a school this winter. Mr. [[underlined]] Hatfield [[/underlined]] states that he has appointed Mr. [[underlined]] John W. Lewey [[/underlined]], one of your students, for [[insert]] to [[/insert]] the school at Hancock. Hope he has not started yet, because they will not be ready for a teacher there under a month or more, and I have already engaged the school to a lady teacher who is waiting for them to plaster the house.

I can locate him at Federalsburg, where I have promised to send a teacher, and where they expect one this week. The enclosed letter from Mr. [[underlined]] Davis [[/underlined]] gives directions as to the route &c.

Hope you will recommend several more of your students to [[underlined]] Dr. Hatfield [[/underlined]]. I can locate them where they are needed.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swaim,

Dear Sir:

Yours received. I am glad to learn that your school is in a prosperous condition, and hope you will continue your efforts to restore harmony where trouble exists in schools near you: but don't like the request you make in relation to this money. This looks [[line]] bad. Mr. [[underlined]] Ives [[/underlined]] has presented your order, dated Sept. 11th, to have deducted from your salary $13.00 and paid to him. I have promised to send it to his address and am obliged to do so unless he withdraws his claim.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swaim,
