Captain,

Your Doc papers & accounts for 4 Qr 1847 were received, but not your November papers which I returned to you for correction on January 25th.

Your Oct & Dec papers will be forwarded to Washington by to-morrows mail.

I have to return some of your quarterly papers for correction and completion, and I take this occasion to say that your papers have been more incorrect in form and substance than any received at this office.

Very Respectfully

Captain,

By the accounts of Lieut I.W. Morrel A.A.C.S. Ten: Cav: at Encantada, for the 4th Qr of 1847, I learn that he purchased, besides fresh beef, the following subs:

3 bbls 147 lbs Pork
2040 "[[ditto for ls]] Bread
3 bu. Beans
183. lbs Coffee
355 "[[ditto for lbs]] Sugar
20 " [[ditto for lbs]] T. Candles}
93 lbs 12 oz Soap}

As all these articles except the two last are presumed to have been on hand a the depot the necessity of these purchases is not seen without some explanation.

He also hires a citizen Clerk at $60=a month and this is unusual and, if proper and necessary, should have your written sanction or recommendation.

He makes an extra issue in Dec: to the pickett guard at Agua Trueva, of 86 lbs F Beef. 10 lbs Coffee

& 15 lbs sugar. the order is signed by Maj: W.P. Land and said to be by order of Col Hamtramch, and unless explained will be charged to Maj: Lane, as he is not the Staff officer of Col: Hamtramch. (see par 1136 Reg Subs: Deot)

I have to request that you will make some inquiries and give Lieut M. the necessary information on these points. I have, of course written to him.

Vry Respectfully
