General,

I have ordered the extra issue (occasional) of molasses, to troops in Florida, to be at the rate of 2 qts: to 100 rations instead of 1 Pt: [see par, 1112 Subs: Reg.] and also that whenever dried apple or peaches are issued, molasses [[strikethrough]] will [[/strikethrough]] ^[[insert]] shall [[/insert]] be issued with them. This increase is recommended by medical & company officers & I believe it is no more than necessary. I therefor hope you will sanction it & if so, I respectfully recommend a corresponding amendment to the Sub: Ref.

Lieutenant,

I received your report of Dec. 1. 1849 & am now awaiting the return of Lieut. Meade The [[Tp. Cny" ??]], and on learning from him that the road across the Peninsular is practicable for stock, I shall at once, start off a drover with a herd of cattle to cross the Kissemmee

People here offer to take & keep their cattle on your side and supply good beef at 6 1/2 ยข a pound. This price is based on the fact that at many posts the entire beef cannot be issued and where the issues are small the expenses of butchering are proportionably greater.

I hope you have contracted ovens on your side but if destitute of materials procure them promptly from Savannah Geo. I have written to Maj. Van Dorn & Capt Miller on this point. I desired them to find brick and Lime as soon as you have that they want them. From

2 to 3.000 brick is an ample supply for one oven, as the arch only need be of brick, and the floor & Chimney may be made with the Clay or others materials found nearly everywhere. There should be an oven at every post likely to be at all permanent,

The supply of Antiscorbutics should be liberal expecially where beef is scarce, and you may issue to each Company the practicable at least say pr. month

4 "[[ditto for Bbbls]] Potatoes

^[[next two are bracketed together]]
2 or 3 "[[ditto for Bbls]] Dried Fruit
[[?]] Molasses are wanted and krout or Pickles

The occasional action of molasses is increased to 2 quarts

The 100 Rations - and may be more of necessary with dried fruit.

All your estimates hereafter will be made in Savannah Geo. as the Palatka Depot is done away with.

As Capt. Miller at Savannah will merely prepare himself to answer your specific demand - The regulation of in the Eastern the Kissemmee will devolve entirely on you.

Very respectfully
