8.23.69. | 84 * Matthews, Jas. R. | Hagerstown, Md.  Aug. 24th 1869.  States that during the winter of 1863 & 4, the Government took possession of the A.M.E. Church, in this place and used it for about five months as a Smallpox Hospital:  that the Church Council inquire if they are not entitled to compensation from the Government for its use:  that they have made no claim up to this time.

States that the colored people of Hendon Hill were much encouraged by their late meeting, and request to have a teacher sent them to open school September 1st.  Requests to be authorized to have made for this school, 25 Soaper's Desks, which he thinks will cost about $4.00/100 each, &c. &c.

States that the house is to be plastered this week and finished with the exception of the fence:  that the cost of house was $225.00 all of which is paid:  that the people have been expecting to have a teacher sent them since October:  that they have found one whom he knows and thinks competent, and who is willing to come:  that his name is [[underlined]] Wm. J.R. Brown, [[/underlined]] and his address is 290 South Howard St. Baltimore:  that he should be sent to Solomon's Island, to Capt. [[underlined]] Peter Brooks [[/underlined]] who will take charge of him &c.

States that Mr. [[underlined]] Core [[/underlined]] has advised him to attend the Normal School for a time before going out to teach:  that he has attended school at Baltimore for 10 years, and thinks himself qualified &c.:  that [[underlined]] John H. Butler, [[/underlined]] his former school-mate, has promised to show him the mode of teaching &c. if he should be located near him.

States that he found the work on this school-house stopped:  that he held a meeting and collected sufficient funds to finish it and thinks the house will be ready for teacher on the 1st of March:  that it is 24 x 35 ft. and by far the best house in the County &c.
