the house of Saml. Craig who is the Methodist pastor here (colored). I can not open school before Monday owing to the church not being in readiness. I have the partial promise of a small house in the village which I think I shall take and let the coloured people furnish it for me and proved for me. The rent of it will be about $20, or $25, per annum. The White people here preach up loyalty and Unionism, but when one comes to test them upon those points they are like the Irishmans flea; viz "when you put your finger on them they are not there." It appears to me that teaching of the coloured people by a white person here is looked upon rather unfavorably by them but I am determined to stay here, and to [[underlined]] teach [[\underlined]] here if I have to subsist upon parched
