Upp Marlbro Jan 11th 1869. To Maj. Gen O.O. Howard Sir. I have been informed by several persons that there are numerous Teachers employed under the Bureau, that receive considerable more compensation that I do. I have had as many as 90 odd scholars. And I am confident that I ahve labored as much as any of them for the good of the School. I cannot see for what reason the former Teacher of my school should receive as large a sum [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] as $50. a month with board found, and I should receive not more than the small sum of $20. a month with board. You know that sum is not sufficient to support a man. I am confident that I have exerted every influence for the good of the School. I keep in School from 9 O'Clock to 4 or 5 in the Even. never particular to the moment. They are all satisfied with the proggress I have made with the children. I do not see any such a difference should be made with us in regards to our Salary. I understand a colored lady has got as high $26. a month with board her name is Miss Delia [[?Davage]]. She is teaching in your employ. Why should a female get so much in advance of me? I understand the aforesaid lady has never had more than 40 scholars Now Sir I will be much indebted to you if you will intercede in my behalf to have my Salary increase. I have taught awhile for it, I think it ought to be increased. If there is any possible chance I hope you will be so kind as to have my Salary increased. Please to answer me as soon as possible.
