The OMB allowance of $175,894,000 for all appropriations will meet the most important Institutional requirements for existing programs by enabling the efficient and effective utilization of base resources. An increase of $7.6 million and 108 workers was approved for the Salaries and Expenses appropriation. These additional resources will provide necessary support for inflationary increases in salaries and other categories of expense, for Museum Support Center operations, for research equipment and publication, for operations and maintenance of buildings and facilities, for information management, and for education and public orientation. The program to upgrade security will be continued, as will funding for special exhibitions and inventory of collections. An amount of $12,500,000 was approved for renovation and improvement of the Institution's facilities, including those of the National Zoological Park, an increase of $2.5 million over fiscal year 1982. The Toal of $9,040,000 requested for the Special Foreign Currency Program also was allowed. As noted in the September report, this latter amount consists of $4 million for the grants program, $4 million for the American Institution of Indian Studies reserve of Indian rupees, and $1,040,000 for the second installment of the Moenjodaro preservation project.

--[[underlined]] Nonappropriated Trust Funds [[/underlined]]: Fiscal year 1984 estimates for nonappropriated trust funds have been changed only to reflect reorganizations described above.
