The meeting of the Board of Regents was held in the Regents' Room of the Smithsonian Institution Building and was called to order by the Chancellor at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 9, 1983. Present were:

Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Chancellor
Senator Henry M. Jackson
Representative Norman Y. Mineta
David C. Acheson
Anne L. Armstrong
William G. Bowen
William A. M. Burden 
Calisle H. Humelsine
S. Dillon Ripley, Secretary

The following Regents were unable to attend because of prior commitments, illness, and transportation difficulties: Vice President Bush, Senator Garn, Senator Goldwater, Representative Boland, Representative Conte, Mr. Austin, Dr. Gell-Mann, and Judge Higginbotham.

Also present were: Under Secretary Phillip S. Hughes; Assistant Secretaries John F. Jameson and David Challinor; Acting Assistant Secretary John E. Reinhardt; Treasurer Christian C. Hohenlohe; Executive Assistant to the Secretary James M. Hobbins; Assistant to the Chief Justice Mark W. Cannon; Assistant to Senator Jackson, D. Micheal Harvey; Assistant to the Senator Goldwater, Jim Horton; Assistant to Mr. Mineta, Paul Schoellhamer; Assistant to Mr. Boland, Mike Sheehy; Assistant to Mr. Conte, Mary Sivleira; and Asistant to Dr. Bowen, Marcia Snowden.
