[[underlined]] Legislation [[/underlined]]
[[underlined]] Arizona Land Purchase [[/underlined]]. On March 24 bills were introduced in both the Senate and the House to authorize the Smithsonian to purchase land in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, for the permanent headquarters of the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory. 

Senators Goldwater, Jackson, and Garn sponsored S. 930 which was referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration. A hearing on the bill was held April 20. Messrs. Boland, Conte, and Mineta were the sponsors of H.R. 2313 which was referred to the Committee on House Administration. No action has been taken on it. 

[[underlined]] Barro Colorado Island Amendment [[/underlined]]. S. 929, introduced by Senator Goldwater for himself, Senator Jackson and Senator Garn on March 24, amends 20 U.S.C. 79e by eliminating language which imposes a ceiling on appropriations for the Barro Colorado Island facility of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The measure was referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration which held a hearing April 20 on it. 

A companion measure, H.R. 2314, was introduced the same day by Mr. Boland for himself, Mr. Conte, and Mr. Mineta. The Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, to which it was referred, has taken no action. 

[[underlined]] National Museum Act [[/underlined]]. On March 16 Mr. Boland for himself, Mr. Conte, and Mr. Mineta introduced H.R. 2119 authorizing appropriations under the National Museum Act for fiscal years 1984, 1985, and 1986. It was referred to the Committee on House Administration which has taken no action on it. 

A companion measure, S. 840, was introduced in the Senate on March 17 by Senator Goldwater for himself, Senator Jackson, and Senator Garn. The bill was referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration which considered it at a hearing on April 20.
