that both of these bequests from Mr. Hirschhorn should be accepted and that any part of the Canadian tax advanced by the Hirshhorn Estate should be reimbursed to it by the Smithsonian from the bequest of $5,000,000. The Trustees present all indicated their agreement."

A partial payment of the Canadian taxes has been made by the Estate, subject to reimbursement from the Smithsonian should the royalty bequest be accepted; the total amount of taxes due is currently unknown, but should approximate $170,000. Counsel for the Estate presently believes that the assets of the Estate will allow the full $5,000,000 bequest to be made; settlement of this matter is not expected until late 1984. In light of the Trustees' recommendations and barring any major change in the conditions, it is the present intention of the Institution to accept both bequests. The Regents will be informed of further developments.

2. With receipt of the approximately 6,000 works of art included in the Hirschhorn bequest expected as early as year's end, planning has proceeded apace for the task of integrating those works into the Museum's existing collection, both physically and registrarily. By the end of 1983 the Museum will have acquired additional space in which to process receipt of the bequest, either within the new Support Center, or (should it prove less expensive to rent space commercially than equip an area of the Support Center specially for this purpose) in leased space. Here each work will be carefully examined, photographed, analyzed for conservation needs, and matted and framed as necessary. A full condition report will be written and an official catalogue entry posted.
