[[underlined]] Report of the Search Committee [[/underlined]]

Dr. Bowen, Chairman of the Regents' Committee formed to find and recommend a successor to Secretary Ripley, referred to a briefing paper which was distributed in advance of this meeting. He then reported on the two meetings which the Committee has held and summarized the steps taken to solicit nominations and address issues which arose regarding criteria for the job and desirable attributes of a new Secretary.

Dr. Bowen noted that the response to the Committee's request for nominations and thoughts about the position has been heartwarming and encouraging. The responses indicate the importance of the Institution in Washington and throughout the nation. The Committee has received approximately 235 names of candidates and it now faces the task of identifying those individuals who seem most worthy of further study.
