The FY 1985 request for renovation and improvement of the Institution's facilities totals $24,505,000. An increase of $12.0 million over FY 1984, the proposed budget reflects the Institution's commitment, as previously presented in the Five-Year Prospectus, to acquire sufficient funding to maintain the Institution's large, aging, and diverse physical plant.

Included in the request is some $5.2 million for repairs and improvements to utility systems, many of which are based on energy study recommendations; $4.3 million for repairs to facades, roofs, and terraces, a major portion of which will continue to be required for the Arts and Industries Building; $2.6 million for fire detection and suppression systems and modifications for safety and security; $2.0 million to initiate construction at Rock Creek Park on the entranceway and Olmstead Walk; $1.7 million to construct a new dormitory on Barro Colorado Island in Panama and an aircraft storage building at Silver Hill; and $5.2 million for a variety of other repairs and improvements. In addition, a further $3.5 million is budgeted for planning costs associated with the repair and renovation of the General Post Office Building, the anticipated acquisition of which is discussed elsewhere in the agenda.

The FY 1985 request for the Special Foreign Currency Program totals $10,750,000 consisting of $4.0 million for the grants program, $4,750,000 to complete the American Institute of Indian Studies' reserve of Indian rupees at a level of $10 million, and $2 million for the final U.
