initial operations of the new Quadrangle facility, including restoration of the FY 1984 Congressional reductions of $1.5 million in the areas of utilizes and MSC operations. Also allowed were $1 million of the $1.2 million requested for research equipment replacement, approximately half of the $1 million requested for collections management, $.7 million of the $2.6 million requested for buildings management and security equipment, $125,000 for automation needs and $150,000 for the purchase of land in Amado, Arizona, for use as a permanent headquarters site of the Whipple Observatory. None of the requested increases were approved for exhibitions, collections acquisition, basic research, or education.

The amount allowed for the Restoration and Renovation of Buildings account includes an increase of approximately $4.8 million of FY 1984, while the Zoo construction account was held at the FY 1984 level of $3.5 million; no funds were allowed for renovation of the General Post Office Building since the authorizing legislation has not been enacted. An amount of $9 million was allowed for the Special Foreign Currency Program, an increase of some $2 million over the previous year's appropriation.

--[[underlined]] Nonappropriated Trust Funds [[/underlined]]: While the Federal appropriation provides the essential base support for the Institution's programs, non-appropriated trust funds enrich these programs and extend their outreach to greater segments of the public. In FY 1985 gross operating revenues from nonappropriated trust funds are projected to total approximately $127 million of which approximately $115 million is attributable to the revenue-producing activities, $6 million to endowment and current fund investments and $6 million to gifts, grants and other miscellaneous income.
