of the Smithsonian. By joining work in progress for several months under the supervision of a professional staff member, interns gain an intimate sense of the work of the Smithsonian and specific museum and research skills.
 
Interns have been recruited from among the National Science Foundation Minority Graduate Fellows, from the historically Black colleges and other minority institutions, at job fairs, from the D.C. area universities, individual contacts and general advertising. At any given time, a number of former interns are employed at the Institution in term or temporary positions, for example: a former intern held an 18-month appointment to coordinate performances for the [[underlined]] Celebration [[/underlined]] exhibit at the Renwick and is now employed at the National Museum of American Art; another holds a 2-year federal appointment at the Air and Space Museum as an assistant curator trainee focusing on the manned space flight collections and the Spacearium; a third is now employed in the National Portrait Gallery as a museum technician (art). An intern at the Renwick successfully competed for the Cooper-Hewitt's 2-year Ford Foundation-funded Fellowship leading to the MA in decorative arts. 

Added to this is a small program of fellowships for minority scholars with a Ph.D. and/or holding faculty status. These awards support independently conceived research, offering more flexibility than the established fellowships in order to attract people not already committed to Smithsonian pursuits.
