S. 13 O.S.E.D.C. Vol. 1. 1868.

Charleston, Kanawha Co. W. Va.
May 4th 1868.

Sharp. C.W. Sub. Asst. Comr.

Encloses school report for April.

States that the anti-negro people are trying to prevent the Freedmen from paying their share toward the
school-building at Brook's Hollow, with a view to buying it for other purposes, and thus defeat the School:- that the school-building at Charleston is finished with the exception of the seats, and is said to be the best in the County:- that he has found it necessary to employ one of his pupils as Asst. in his school, and has paid her out of his own salary, but does not feel able to do so after the present week:- that his time is so much occupied it is difficult for him to visit other schools in his District.

Thinks it might be well for the Bureau to do something toward a school-house at Buffalo, if the people will raise their share of the money first.
