Port Tobacco Dec 10th 1869

Major D G Swain U.S.A.
Act. Supt. of Education

Dear Sir

Your letter of the 9th inst is received. In reference to your enquiry respecting Daniel I Thomas, I know him and have no confidence in his integrity or capacity His character for [[underlined]] veracity [/underlined]] is [[underlined]] bad [/underlined]].
Respecting the special work in which he represents himself as having been engaged I will learn more next week, and write to you upon the subject. "Mount Pleasant," near which he lives, being some seventeen or eighteen miles from my place of residence.

I think a good colored teacher would be preferable to Daniel I. Thomas.

Yours very respectfully
