[[underlined]] Smithsonian Support to Outside Organizations [[/underlined]]

The Institution maintains memberships in a number of scientific, cultural, and other professional organizations, the missions and activities of which are closely aligned to those of the Smithsonian. Through these memberships the staff establishes contacts with colleagues in other institutions, facilitating the exchange of expertise and resources and often resulting in cooperative research and exhibition endeavors. Conferences and publications produced by these organizations serve as a valuable source of data on new trends and techniques relating to a myriad of technical aspects of museum operations. While Smithsonian support to these organizations is generally limited to a small membership fee, in some instances the relationship is more substantial either in the amount of funding provided or the nature of the relationship. In total, approximately $181,000 in federal and trust funding is projected for support to outside organizations in FY 1984. Continued support to those organizations is subject to periodic review to reassess the benefits of the relationship.

As an update to data provided in September 1978 on Smithsonian support of other organizations, a list of those organizations to which the Institution contributes over $1,000 in membership fees or other subventions is provided below:
