Philadelphia. Febuary 12th 1870

Mr W L Vanderlip.
Washington D.C.

Dear Sir:
On Saturday Jan 24th I left Forktown Md to come home for a few days intending to return the following week. I called on Col. Corson and he informed me that I had taken a very wrong Step in Coming away from Forktown, and I offered to go back, Immediately but He wrote to Washington to see if he should send me back and he recieved for answer that [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] I should not go back untill some inquiries were made.

As I was not aware of an impropriety in coming home at the end of the Three Months I hope that any infringement of your Rules, in my Case, will be overlooked.

Will you please inform me if I am to be retained in my position, and if so when am I to resume my Duties?

Sir I remain Very Respectfully,
Your Obedient Serv't,
