Major W. L. Vanderlip

Sir:

I was very sorry not to see you on Wednesday & still more sorry that our plans do not admit of our staying here over Saturday in order to visit some of the Maryland Schools.

I have not yet answered your note of last week about sending Jos. Chew to Church Hill. We do not [[underlined]] want [[/underlined]] to take him at all — neither Mr. Alvord nor Major Brown could [[underlined]] promise [[/underlined]] the continuance of the $10.- payment beyond the present quarter, & although there is, I suppose, but little doubt about it, still, if there is the slightest, we shall be running the risk of incurring a debt by taking any Teachers beyond those already engaged.
