White Sulphur Springs
Greenbrier County
West Virginia
October 16th 1867

John Kimball Esq

D'Sir:

Yours containing a plan for the erection of a suitable building for a Public School house was duly received.

After my brief interview with you at this place my brother Edmund S. Calwell, Executed a deed in fee Simple to the Board of Education, [[underlined]] for the sole use and benefit of [[/underlined]] the Freedman of the White Sulphur Springs Township, conveying a suitable and eligible Lot for Educational and Religious purposes.

I submitted the plan of building transmitted by you to Claiborne Smith and James Kitchen, two reputable and intelligent Colored citizens of this Township, who approved the same, and to ensure the building of the School house procured subscriptions for that purpose, in addition to the $200, to be furnished by General Howard.

The Lot conveyed by E. S. Calwell, for the use of the Freedman is situate a few hundred yards from the Improved Lot of the white Sulphur Springs adjoined to the line of the Covington & Ohio Rail Road.

I enclose a bill of estimates of costs for lumber for building, furnished by C. Ayres, a reliable Carpenter & builder of this place. If we can command the means, the building can be put up for use immediately.
