be raised to establish catholic schools for colored children in this section as they were likely to loose a large portion of their colored members if they did not establish schools for them and allowed them to be taught by Protestants. Three fourths or more of the colored people in this vicinity are Catholics as is also full that proportion of the whites. Drinking and drunkenness is common among them for which their catholic religion allows them [[underlined]] ample licence [[/underlined]]. I had hoped that much good could be done among them by schools but it is now likely to be hindered by this action in the interest of Catholicism which is so very jealous of the loss of power.
