if they had to leave their church to do so.

The rebel sentiment here is very strong, and its desire to use authority over the negro very great. They continually regret and complain that they [[underlined]] cant make them do as they used to. [[/underlined]] Or in other words they cannot give them a blow or a kick whenever it suits them nor can they make them quite servile enough to sait them. They have said that they could controll them now better [[underlined]] through their religion [[/underlined]] than any other way and they not only hope by this means to help them down but to controll their votes if they are infranchised. A bigoted religion through which to control them, and numerous grog shops to debase t hem and keep them poor. Such is the programme. I hope however to counteract some of this evil and hope to be able to go on and put up school houses regardless of any action of theirs.
